FRIENDS OF STADT MOERS PARK

Stadt Moers Park is an interesting and important part of Whiston's local history.

During the late 16th century Whiston/Riding Colliery, one of the first coal mines in Whiston, was located on what is now the Tushingham Quadrant of Stadt Mores Park.

In the early 19th century Whiston Colliery was linked to the cities of Liverpool and Manchester by the Seel and Willis Branch Line. Remnants of this line can be seen at the South West corner of the Tushingham Quadrant in the form of metal rails embedded into tarmac.

Tushingham Metallic Brickworks made bricks from locally extracted clay and shale. Tushingham Pond was formed as a result of this process. The Brickworks closed in the early 1970's and the land was sold to the Council. ( Now Knowsley Borough).

Before the land was reclaimed in the early 1980's the site was used for refuse tipping. The land was transformed into a park in 1984.

Stadt Moers Park ( named after Knowsley Borough's Twin Town ) is now the largest area of public open space in the urban heart of Knowsley. It covers 220 acres of formal parkland, meadows, woodland and ponds.

The aim of the Friends of Stadt Moers Park is to help conserve and develop the park and to organise events within the park in partnership with Knowsley Council's Parks and Countryside Service. Membership of the Friends of Stadt Moers Park is open to any person with an interest in or love of Stadt Moers Park.

The Friends of Stadt Moers Park  meet at 7 p.m. on  the first Wednesday of each month in the Visitors Centre on Pottery Lane.
